Amazon River ranks 2nd in natural wonders contest

After slipping to second from bottom place a week ago, the Amazon River/Rainforest moved up to second place in the selection of 28 Official Finalist Candidates competing to be one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

According to the latest ranking of contest organizer, the New 7 Wonders Foundation, the Amazon River ranks second after the Iguazú Falls in Argentina and Brazil.

The third place is occupied by Great Barrier Reef (Australia and Papua New Guinea), followed by Angel Falls (Venezuela) and Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. Indonesia`s Komodo Island, which ranked last a week ago, has climbed to sixth place.

"The contest ends in mid-2011 and we need the support of all Peruvian citizens to have the Amazon River among the seven natural wonders of the world," said the regional government of Loreto.
